About Company of Angels Founded in 1959 as an artist’s cooperative by actors Richard Chamberlain, Leonard Nimoy, Vic Morrow and legendary entertainment attorney Bertram Fields, Company of Angels (CoA) recently celebrated it’s 52nd Anniversary, making it the oldest non-profit professional theater in Los Angeles. Today the Company is dedicated to depicting stories relevant to a diverse Los Angeles audience. The Company develops emerging artists and re-envisions theater to entertain new audiences by producing new work for first-run productions and fosters staged readings and workshops on a regular basis. The Company aims to share and give voice to the many stories that exist in their surrounding communities. Since it’s founding in 1959, the Company has earned a reputation for strong productions of classic American theatre as well as presenting new works. In doing so, the Company has received almost every Los Angeles theatrical award, including the LA Drama Critics’ Circle Award, the Drama-Logue Award, the LA Weekly Award, and the LA Stage Ovation Award. Company of Angels is a proud constituent member of Theater Communications Group (TCG) and the Los Angeles Stage Alliance (LASA).
La Colectiva Chorizo y Maguey present with Company of Angels
The World Premiere of

blu
by Virginia Grise
Directed by Laurie Carlos

“blu is technically expert. … Grise’s choral effects are thrilling and unexpected. But, just as important, the play uses a heady mix of Latino and musical influences to cast oblique light on people you don’t usually come across on the English speaking stage.”
-David Hare, playwright, Yale Drama Award Judge

Set in Barrio, USA, Virginia Grise’s blu traces the explosive after-effects of prison and hunger, desire and war. Told in a heightened poetic language of street talk, the play follows a queer Chicana/o family as they try to envision an earth and sky without police and their helicopters. Soledad and her woman Hailstorm raise Blu, Gemini and Lunatico while their father Eme serves a three-strike sentence. Blu seeks a better way, Hailstorm fights for beauty amidst all the hurt and ugly, Eme yearns for his lost love and fam, Lunatico is true to tradition and Gemini dreams dreams for everyone while Soledad tries to hold it all together without having her bruised heart touched or broken, one more time. blu is a tattooed offering to Los Angeles audiences, the gods and the ancestors that might be listening.

Ricky Sencion
I am a first generation Mexican American and self-taught artist. I started my series of Little Girls in the summer of 1998 after moving back to Los Angeles. The idea stems from a drawing I completed 27 years ago while in high school. My Little Girls are a reflection of myself; they are simple, colorful, silly, and each has a little twist to her. I use mostly acrylic and pencil on 4’x6’ canvas.

Why not a “little boy?”
With a little boy I feel restricted to what I can imagine. With a little girl, I feel freedom, joy, and endless sense of possibility. It’s like playing with dolls and dressing them up

Beauty can be a drag… or a path to citizenship. But, is there room for love in this pageant world? Bordering on Love, is new play by Evangeline Ordaz that combines two of our most provocative questions that confront our nation – the definition of marriage and immigration. It’s a platonic love-story dramady with a drag queen chorus.

THE MEXICAN AS TOLD BY US MEXICANS
A retelling of Jack London’s The Mexican
Written and Directed by Ricardo A. Bracho and Virginia Grise

The Mexican as Told By Us Mexicans is an adaptation/theatrical retelling of an overlooked short story by the important literary figure Jack London as it is also a collaborative attempt to join avant-garde theatre and cinematic techniques to the historical problematics arising from annexation and conquest, revolution and industrialization, gender and border politics. The adaptation by Ricardo A. Bracho and Virginia Grise, as Californian and Texan Mexicans, immigrant/indigenous chican@s, queer theater artists seeks to advance an aesthetic that pulls the populist carpa, most known in the US through the work of Teatro Campesino and other Chicano teatro collectives, towards a reckoning with Brechtian epic theater, gender queer performance art practices and the legacy of experimentation found in the work of Maria Irene Fornes and Adrienne Kennedy.

SYNOPSIS
To that end, The Mexican as Told By Us Mexicans retains much of London’s narrative, originally written while reporting on the Mexican Revolution from the border town of El Paso, Texas. Based in part on the life of the boxer Joe Rivers who donated the earnings from his matches in the US to the cause of the Mexican Revolution – The Mexican as Told By Us Mexicans follows a boxer, renamed here Mexico. The character Mexico joins a group of committed revolutionists who doubt his commitment to the revolutionary cause. He proves his worth and faith, first by donating much-needed monies to the revolution and later, while on a mission to communicate information to comrades in California, kills an adversary to the cause. He then expresses his desire to fight for the Mexican Revolution in a boxing ring in California in a highly publicized and racialized bout with a legendary white boxer.

The latter half of the short story, and subsequently, our play takes up the negotiations towards the big match and the story’s great set piece – a fierce battle told from multiple perspectives: Mexico, his opponent, their respective coaches and figures in the crowd. Significantly, Mexico while in the ring recalls the horrific death of his parents at anti-revolutionary hands as his own hands are locked in a battle in which he eventually triumphs, allowing in London’s words, for “the revolution to go on.”
